How to escape a fire outbreak
Fire outbreaks happen almost every single day. There are chances that there is one happening right now as you are reading this. That’s how sporadic it is. So, what are the steps you should take if you get cut up in a fire outbreak at home?
- Start evacuation immediately. Ensure that you do not grab any heavy things that might slow you down.
- If you have a tactical helmet, now is the best time to put it on. This will prevent you from getting injured by dropping objects or ceiling fragments.
- Find the nearest fire alarm pull station around you!
- If you discover that there is smoke in the air, try to stay low to the ground to avoid bumping your head in something. It would also help you to reduce inhalation exposure. Steady yourself with the wall and find the nearest exit out.
- Use stairs only! Elevators are a bad idea during fire outbreaks. Also, feel every doorknob before touching it. It might be extremely hot. Use a towel or a cloth if there is no other way around such a door.
- Once you are clear from danger, call the fire department immediately and find a refuge area.
- Stay put if you are unable to exit the building safely – either due to increased smoke or fire.
- Call for help and keep the door closed while you wait for assistance.
- If smoke is creeping into the room while you wait – either under or around the door – stuff it with wet sheets to keep the smoke out.
- If there is a window, open it and stay close to it so that you can be easily spotted and rescued. You can hang brightly colored clothing to provide a signal of your location.
