Types of Police Uniform

When it comes to keeping the public safe, no one has it more manageable than the men and women who dedicate their lives to protecting the peace of society. This duty necessitates an ample supply of durable, high-quality police gear and clean, well-maintained clothes. Police gear includes everything a law enforcement agency may require, from uniforms and equipment for patrol and active-duty officers to that of prisons and SWAT teams.

A police uniform must withstand the wear and tear of daily patrols without losing its crisp, uniform appearance. Depending on the needs of the police force, officers may be issued a wide variety of uniforms. There are Class A, B, and C uniforms and outfits approved by the Federal Bureau of Prisons.

• Class A Uniform: Also known as a “dress uniform,” this is the most formal style of police uniform. Law enforcement agencies wear it to commemorative public events like a ceremony, a burial, or a banquet to show respect and honor. The Class A Uniform consists of a dress coat in dark navy wool or a dark navy wool blend, an emblem, uniform shirts, uniform pants, white gloves, a tie, and a formal police hat.

• Class B Uniform: A more relaxed, but still tailored, uniform for operational/casual duty situations. Fabrics designed to endure heavy wear are issued to patrol and uniformed personnel. Performance polo or uniform shirt, tactical pants, PDU pants, armor carrier, duty belt together with other police gear make up the standard Class B Uniform.

• Class C Uniform: Tactical operators wear the Class C uniform, designed for extreme conditions like riot control. The uniform is both challenging and comfortable. The class C uniform is athletically tailored and often crafted from ripstop or poly-cotton. These uniforms are designated for SWAT teams, K9 units, and other special operations teams.
