Finding the right plate carrier fit

The size of your plate carrier has nothing to do with your shirt size! However, it does have everything to do with the size of your armor plate. There are several things to consider when choosing a plate carrier. Finding one that will perfectly fit the armor that you have should be top on your priority list.

With so many companies coming up these days, there are more false information on plate carrier sizing more than ever before. Many manufacturers call their products a 10”x12” size. But when you measure it, you would find out that it is either plus or minus 1”. So, what can you do?

Start by taking the right measurements. There are lots of people who face sizing and fitness problems with plate carrier solely because they are unable to take proper measurements. Some do not even understand what to measure! And this is often the root of their confusion. Sadly, the knee-jerk reaction of most people is to order a larger size. Ironically, there is an incorrect belief that a larger sized plate carrier would provide you with much more coverage and protection. On the contrary! Bad-fit plate carriers would give you a lot of problems.

First off, it would affect your shooting stance. Since you are wearing an over-sized plate carrier, you would get coverage so wide that it disrupts your chance of having a proper shooting stance. Hence, you can no longer engage your weapons as effectively as you ought to. You don’t want that, especially in a combat situation.

Also, large-sized plate carrier can drastically reduce your mobility by adding much more weight from the extra plating and material. Know that you are not just wearing plate for a parade. You’re going to combat with them. Not having the best fitting plate carrier can affect your responsiveness, offensiveness, as well as your agility. Do not be like the armored turtle that is heavy on defense but docile on attack.
